Government Approves 2006 Budget in Stormy Session

On 30 May the cabinet approved the 2006 budget that included a controversial $113,000,000 cut in the defense budget. 18 Labour ministers refused to sign onto the new budget because it did not include provisions for using the new surplus to increase government spending. The finance minister has promised to follow the example set by finance minister Binyamin Netanyahu and not use the surplus to increase government spending.
